While design and style are imperative, your dream deck can be built from a selection of materials. All decks are built with a frame made from pressure treated wood, but the choice of cedar or composite lumber offers you as a homeowner to transform your property in its appearance and overall atmosphere. Some owners might want to paint or stain their deck, which becomes a factor in your decision making when choosing material. Given the wide variety of paint and stains available for exterior wood, your choice of finish will completely change the way your deck looks in relation to your home and overall property.

Below are some brief descriptions of your deck material options.

Building a deck with solely pressure treated material is recommended if you are looking for the best possible deck without breaking the bank. Pressure treated decks come in the standard dark green or, for a premium, brown. Brown pressure treated is coloured to give the appearance of cedar wood while maintaining a lower cost. However, brown pressure treated does not give off the same aroma you would get from cedar. Pressure treated lumber will shrink slightly as natural weathering occurs, and within 3-12 months (depending on the climate’s conditions) it will be ready to stain or paint. The natural colour will fade slightly over the first year but will hold its resistance to mould, rot and termites for decades.

Cedar decks are a very popular amongst homeowners who are looking to give their property a more elegant and premium look and feel. Cedar wood is naturally resistant to mould, rot and termite infestation. Cedar decks are generally much lighter in colour which makes them more aesthetically pleasing than pressure treated ones. One of the compelling selling points of cedar material is its beautiful, refreshing, yet subtle aroma, especially after a rain fall. Cedar decks provide a cozy atmosphere, and its appearance can compliment a number of properties. Nonetheless, some home styles and backyard layouts might look better with a different type of decking material.

A parquet decking style is a bit more complex in both its visual presentation and construction. This type of decking pattern is based on the indoor hardwood style that emits a homey and snug vibe. It requires additional materials, hardware and labour.

The diamond pattern is similar to the simple, diagonal design, just with more dividing areas. This is great if you want to create separate areas and different atmospheres on each deck. The defined outline of the diamond pattern makes it easy for you to organize your space.

This decking style is sometimes used when the deck is a different shape than just a simple rectangle or square. This is a straightforward design and can have staggered boards if needed. With a smaller deck, these long boards will create the illusion of more space.

Having different sizes for your boards requires more labour thus making this option in the higher price range. However, lumber can be shaped into any way you prefer thus making alternating board sizes can create a whole new look to your deck.
